Zu alt zum Arbeiten, zu jung zum Sterben, gerade richtig zum Reisen. ...........................................................................Too old to work, too young to die, just right to travel.
Today (2018.06.30) we went with Jennifer and Sascha to Weil am Rhein in Germany (71 km) to attend a Medieval Phantasy Spectacle. It was a very sunny and hot day. It was nice to be outside and see all the people in medieval and phantasy dresses. There were some attractions too. Like the Knight Games as my picture shows.
Today (2018.06.25.) we took buses from the hotel to the Point Loma Peninsula and visited the Cabrillo National Monument (14 km). From here is a wonderful view over the Coronado Peninsula and San Diego. Then we headed back to the hotel and from here to the airport. Our plane to Zürich left 6.50pm. The picture shows the view from the Cabrillo National Monument towards San Diego.
Today (2018.06.24) the bus arrived at Tijuana at 6.15 o'clock after 7 hours and 476 km. The drive was quite OK. We had two security stops on the way. Otherwise, we slept more or less to whole time. From the Tijuana Bus Terminal, we took a taxi to the border. This was cheaper than taking a bus. There were many people crossing the border. This needed some time. But the border check itself was fast, friendly and without any problems. I hope next time it is as good as this time. After the border, we took the trolley to downtown San Diego and a bus to the airport. From here the hotel shuttle brought us to our hotel. After we were freshened up we went shopping and spend the rest of the day in the Old Town where someone wanted to take a picture of us. Here it is. Since it is cool in San Diego (21 °C) I wear the first time after a long time long trousers and shoes. And even a pullover was needed from time to time.
Today (2018.06.23) we let clean the outside of our motorhome. It is as clean as since long time no more. Then we put it to a indoor storage. Here is will wait in darkness to our return. At 11 pm we'll take an overnight bus to Tijuana. Since we had no place to stay we were very early at the bus station. Such a bus as on the picture will bring us to Tijuana.
Today (2018.06.22) we finished the cleaning of our motorhome. The weather was hot today. This means the work let us sweat a lot. We are now one week in Mexico and are still alive and nothing was stolen. I lost my sunglasses about 4 days ago. I didn't know where. Today I came back to an office I was then too. And there lay my sunglasses on the desk untouched. I hope this will go on like this when we travel through Mexico. The picture shows some palm trees in the RV Resort we are staying.
Today (2018.06.21) we had another cleaning day. The inside of our motorhome is cleaned now. Over the last days, the waves at the sea got calmer, the cool breeze got less and the temperature and humidity rose. It's only about 32 °C (90 F) but we are sweating a lot. There was another nice sunset here tonight as my picture shows.
Today (2018.06.20) we learned that the repair shop can't find the needed air shocks in Northamerica. Therefore we will import them from Europe ourselves. We didn't come to Puerto Peñasco only to have fun in the sun at the sea. No, we came here to store our motorhome and travel home for two months. Like this, we will bring these air shocks from home. Today we started to clean our motorhome to store it. The picture shows a gate to a place where almost nothing is. Here are a lot of ruins and unfinished construction projects like this one. I don't understand this until now.
Today (2018.06.19) we went to the car repair shop to let repair the alinement problem. The part they ordered was delivered. The installation of it didn't lead to success. It seems the antishock is bent too. Until now they couldn't find such a part here in Mexico. Like this, we are in the next repair story. We will see how we solve this problem in the end. Next to our RV Park is a bar directly at the sea. Every evening we go there to have some drinks, meet people and see the sunset. Tonight was a nice play of colors in the sky. My picture shows one situation of it.
Today (2018.06.17) we had a lazy Sunday at the RV Park. In the late afternoon, I went for a walk to the Malecón Fish and Shrimp Market (3 km). Here stands the Shrimp Fishing Statue which you see in my picture. In the background is a hill which looks from the other side lake a whale and therefore is called Whale Hill. On top of it stands the Historic Lighthouse.
Today (2018.06.16) we stayed in Puerto Peñasco. First, we went to a car electric shop. They could fix the problem with the electronics of the engine. Then we went to a car mechanic shop. They analyzed the problem with the alinement of the front wheels. The result is that a bolt is bent. They immediately ordered new parts. And it seems here in Mexico its possible to get parts for our car. The parts will be supplied next Tuesday. Tuesday afternoon they will be mounted. We will see if the problem is solved then. Then we changed the RV Park. We didn't like the one we were last night. We moved to one at the beach. We spent a wonderful day here. The weather was nice sunny and warm but not hot. The picture shows the beach just in front of our RV Park.
Today (2018.06.15) we traveled from Yuma AZ in the USA to Puerto Peñasco in Mexico (299 km). The border crossing was very easy. It took no more than 15 minutes. The drive went through a desert-like landscape. Suddenly there were sand dunes on the street. I hit one of these dunes too fast. A strong beat hit the right front wheel and damaged the alinement. And the security switch was activated. This means the motor didn't run anymore. Many people liked to help us. But nobody knew where this security switch is. In the end, we were towed to Puerto Peñasco for about 70 km. Here someone found the security switch and we were able to drive further. Tomorrow we go to check the alinement. The picture shows the sand dunes on the street.
Today (2018.06.14) we traveled from San Diego in California to Yuma in Arizona (262 km). The drive was very scenic. First, we drove up mountains from sea level up to more than 1200 m (4000 feet) and then down again. We passed large fields where they grow grass. I think this is to feed American cows. Then we passed some sand dunes. At last, we ended up in a resort with a lot of palm trees as my picture shows. It's hot here again. The highest temperature we measured today was 43 °C (109 F). But we are almost used to this temperature now!
Today (2018.06.13) we went to fill our propane tanks. The guy at the filling station was so overwhelmed by the story about our travels that he didn't want to be paid for the propane he filled in our tanks. Thank you a lot. Then we visited Mount Soledad (53 km). I thought it is only a nice overlook over San Diego but it is a National Veterans Memorial too. The picture shows the memorial. The sight was great but there was some haze in the air what didn't lead to great pictures of the landscape.
Today (2018.06.12) we went to visit the famous San Diego Zoo with busses and the trolley. The zoo is known for its giant panda breeding program. The picture shows Bai Yun the female giant panda which came to the San Diego Zoo in 1996. Over time she gave birth to 6 cubs. The first 5 are back in China. Only the youngest cub «Xiao Liwu» and the father of the last 5 cubs «Goa Goa» are still in the San Diego Zoo.
Today (2018.06.11) we took bus and trolley to the downtown of San Diego and took a long walk along the waterfront. The picture shows the Star of India an iron windjammer ship which was built 1863 on the Isle of Man. It is the oldest ship of its kind which still sails regularly. The weather here in San Diego is just wonderful. The sun shines bright and the temperature is in a comfortable range of 20 - 30 °C.
Today we changed from one RV Park to another (44 km). On the way, we passed the Hotel California (Hotel del Coronado) as the picture shows. In the evening my friend Dan Caldwell and his wife Betsy picked us up and showed us around at San Diego and invited us to a Mexican dinner at the Old Town. It was just fabulous! Thank you a lot, Dan and Betsy.
Today we traveled from Twentynine Palms to San Diego (349 km). First, we drove again through the Joshua Tree National Park and visited there the Key View Outlook which we couldn't visit yesterday because the road was closed due to roadworks. Then we drove to San Diego. It was a nice drive up and down and around hills. Here in San Diego, the temperature is almost half of what it was since Tucson but the prices for RV Parks are at least double. The picture shows a scene of the drive at Riverside.
Today we traveled from Ajo in Arizona to Indio in California (468 km). I thought when we have left the Tucson Valley the temperature will drop down. But it didn't. It was the whole day at 40 °C. Therefore we drove farther then we have planned. While we drive we have cold air in the motorhome. But when we stay there is no cooling anymore. Here at Indio, it's hot too. We walked tonight to a nearby shop to have some ice cream. The picture is made not far after we have left Ajo. I liked the rough landscape with the cacti.
Today we said goodbye to Stefan and Edith again and traveled from Tucson to Ajo (306 km). On the way, we visited the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Since the roads in the park are gravel roads we did only a small part of it. An Organ Pipe Cactus is the one in the middle of the picture with the many arms. The tall ones are Saguaro Cacti. We thought that Ajo is a small desert village. We were surprised that it is a nice town. It is this nice because there is a huge Open Pit Copper Mine. The mine was closed in 1985.
Yesterday and today the highest temperature here in Tucson was 41 °C (106 °F) and the lowest 23 °C (74 °F). We couldn't do anything than sitting in a cooled room. Today I tried to find a company which is able to replace our cracked windshield. And I was lucky I have an appointment for tomorrow at 1pm. That would be the first time we find replacement parts here in the USA. The picture shows the crack at our windshield.
Yesterday was my office day. Since it is very hot here in Tucson I did it with a lot of sweat. Today Stefan and Edith took us up to Mt. Lemmon. First, we hiked around the Rose Canyon Lake and then we went up to Summerhaven to chill on a patio of a restaurant (53 km). Here in Tucson on an altitude of 790 meters, it was today 40 °C (104 °F). At the Rose Canyon Lake on an altitude of about 2000 meter, it was only 27 °C (81 °F). This was much more pleasant. The picture shows the Rose Canyon Lake.
